Welcome to the next addition of Firebase News. Again, thank you all for sharing and signing up. Every week our readership grows due to you.
This week we have some really interesting Firebase articles: learning Flutter with Firebase (you need to check out Flutter if you haven’t already), building a Todoist clone, the new Firebase Crashlytics SDK, where to put your DB calls, and a fun one on blink detection using the Firebase ML Kit.
Also, the waitlist for Firemon has been growing. In case you don’t know, Firemon is a new app that helps you manage and predict your Firebase costs. We, like many, got hit with some unexpected usage costs, so we built an application to handle alerting/monitoring (more granular than Google’s alerts) and cost predictions.
You can sign up for the waitlist and share to get bumped up higher.
And now away we go…
Firebase Crashlytics SDKs Released
Just released in Beta, there is now an SDK to “get comprehensive crash reports” in the Firebase console. Looking forward to this to simplified and consolidated reporting. I’m not too worried about the “Forever Google Beta” since the Firebase teams fairly quick at moving out of Beta.
Flutter & Firebase
If you haven’t tried Flutter, it is a pretty neat system for building universal mobile apps. Google created Flutter, so there is solid integration with Firebase. Check out this video - #1 of 28 tutorials from @thenetninjauk.
A Todoist Clone with Firebase and React
At almost 8 hours, this is an intense video of creating a clone of Todoist with React Hooks and Firebase. However, after going through this great video you’ll know in detail the platforms. Created by @CarnesBeau who is a developer at FreeCodeCamp.
Should I query my Firebase database directly, or use Cloud Functions?
An important design question, that doesn’t have a simple answer especially when you consider security. By @CodingDoug who was previously at Google/Firebase.
Blink detection on Android using Firebase ML Kit’s Face Detection API
Now this is a fun one…using Firebase’s ML kit to detect blinks. @harshitdwivedi has an entire series on ML Kit - just look at the bottom of the article.
That is all for this week and hope you enjoyed reading! If you have article you think are good, please let me know.

Also, don’t forget to check out Firemon for controlling your Firebase costs.
